Other NAMI News
NAMI Lubbock members featured on Fox34:
On July 13th, "Fox34 News @ Nine"
reporter and recent Lubbock Legend's recipient Christal Bennett
interviewed fellow recipient Marcy Mayberry during a new segment
appropriately called "The Good News at Nine." This segment is
dedicated to highlighting inspirational stories from people in
Lubbock and the surroudning communities. Mayberry, who was
diagnosed with depression over a dozen years ago, went into grave
detail about her struggles with depression and how she has managed
to live with it since a suicide attempt that occurred a year ago.
For more information on the story, or to request a copy, please
contact Fox34 at (806) 745-3434 or e-mail the station at

NAMI Lubbock Legends Award Dinner:
NAMI Lubbock held their
Inaugural Lubbock Legends Awards Dinner on Tuesday, May 23rd at
Oakwood Baptist Church. This years dinner
will be sponsored by Bristol Meyers Squibb Pharmaceutical Company
and NAMI Lubbock and catered by Ambrosia
Catering. With nearly 50 people in attendance, NAMI Lubbock
recognized their own volunteers and the programs they have served in
over the past year. The main spotlight though, went to
The Lubbock Legends Award recipients. The series of
awards were given out to three particular individuals this year who
have made a significant contribution to the world of mental health
in the local community. They are the following:
-
Christal Bennett of Fox34 was the
recipient of the Excellence in Journalism Award. She was chosen to be a recipient of
this honor as a result of her compassionate reporting on NAMI
Lubbock and the Miami shooting that occurred in December 2005.
-
Jim
Gamble, Ed.D., LPC was the recipient of the
Mental Health Professional Award.
He was chosen for his continued support of NAMI Lubbock and for
working tirelessly with people with serious mental illness as well
as those that love them and care for them.
-
Marcy
Mayberry was the recipient of the
Mission in Action Award. Marcy
has had no problem telling anybody of her struggles with depression
and how finding NAMI last Summer following a hospitalization was
instrumental in her path to recovery. The last 12 months for
Marcy have literally been nothing less than a Cinderella story.
